Mount Druitt Hub
LIBRARY EXTENSION, COMMUNITY CENTRE EXTENSION & RENOVATION
The Mount Druitt Town Centre has a unique identity: it’s a park!
Public facilities are thoughtfully dispersed throughout this green heart, including the Shade Pavilion, Library, Community Hub, First Nations Hub, and Pool. Rather than lining traditional streets, the buildings are nestled among the trees, without formal street addresses.
To strengthen the building’s relationship with Country, the new wedge-shaped extension has been designed to unify the overall form while minimising its footprint. It completes the circular plan, allowing the building to be approached, welcomed, and experienced from all directions.
The plan includes a major library extension and a beautiful new community hall on the upper level—a flexible, welcoming space for everyone to use. Two planted courtyards gently separate the new and existing structures, drawing Country into the building and allowing natural light to flow through the heart of the library.
Engagement sessions with the Interim Dharug Design Panel guided the design process and established three core principles: Do no harm, Connect to Country, Reveal and express First Nations’ culture. These principles are deeply embedded in the project’s design.
